From a large list of Gastrointestinal Disorders, “Inflammatory bowel diseases” are very important and common medical subjects in the United States. The two disorders associated with inflammatory bowel diseases, are Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Both involve an inflammation of the lining of the intestinal tract. Crohn’s disease can involve any segment of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anal region, while Ulcerative Colitis strictly involves the large intestine.
Both conditions cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and blood in stools, and both are diagnosed with a colonoscopy accompanied with biopsies of the involved mucosa.
This is a great subject due to the prevalence of these conditions in the US. I am sure that many of you have encountered people or family members with involvements related to these subjects. Any thoughts?
